Torrents and G2

Postby old_death » 22 Nov 2009 22:25

I think, there should be a few updates to the way Shareaza exchanges torrent data via G2.

The first thing would be for Shareaza to remember the hashes of batch torrents in which a file has been included. This means, the library database should contain the BITH hash of the complete batch torrent additional to the normal hashes. This means there could be 2 different BITH hashes for the same file.

The second thing would be to remember all trackers know while downloading a file.

These conditions given, Shareaza should exchange all known trackers a download. This means trackers are added to normal downloads if this is possible (as well as the batch torrent BITH hash if this is necessary to download the file using the tracker).

An other thing Shareaza should exchange are the hashes for the files contained in a batch torrent. This means if Shareaza starts a batch torrent download, it should search the network for others already having downloaded the torrent (and therefore knowing the batch torrent BITH hash) and get all possible hashes for each file contained in this batch torrent. Then files also found in the other networks can also be downloaded from sources external to the tracker.

Hmmmm G2 is informing requester about sources locarion, right? Then could it be just like the one big tracker? And inform about sources which was found and they could start direct download? Perhaps tracker itslef would not be needed? Just G2 would play role of tracker?

Oce, this was not what I asked for and your "idea" makes only sense if there are at least 50% G2 users in a BitTorrent swarm - which is extremely unlikely under the given conditions. This could work once if one or two of the big BT clients would implement G2 as a network as an alternative to the normal DHT.

My question was how does Shareaza get trackers for torrents without specified trackers if the BT extension for tracker exchange has not jet been implemented... ? Is this a tracker exchange via G2?

IIRC, G2 is already used as big tracker, somewhat...

Incidentally, now that there are btih links without tracker info in existence... Does Shareaza have the ability to download the .torrent file over G2 by btih? IIRC Shareaza only shares btihs for torrents it is currently seeding. Which does not help in finding trackers and BT sources.

Shareaza exchange all kind of hashes over G2. Magnet with BTIH but without tracker is plain Shareaza download. This download will not be seeded.

Magnet with tracker is "ShareazaBitTorrentDownload", similar to download created using .torrent files.

MAGNET ERA BEGINS !!!

.torrent files are only for private trackers.

All open trackers (and private also) will have same fate like MiniNova, SceneToreents and other. They all are doomed. And this is cool. Long live real P2P without .torrents files.

being a big fan of batch files, I'm glad shareaza isn't more popular for this reason alone.
If this could be done, allowing torrents to branch out to the other protocols for sources, this would truly be the ultimate client. but at least being able to share batch torrents AS batch torrents would be a step in the right direction. it hadn't even occurred to me yet that shareaza wouldn't have the BITH for the batch accessible while sharing outside seeding, thanks Old.

Oh, and a new one I just found, it needs better handling of adding batch downloads. I downloaded a portion of a batch download several months ago, and had a HD wipe itself in the meantime, so basically I still happened to have the parts I'd already downloaded, but the parts I skipped because I had them I lost. now, when I try to add the batch again, it finds one (several) of the files in it, and asks if I want to re-download the given file; If I tell it not to, it assumes I don't want anything from that torrent, and abandons the attempt. it would be nice if it could skip the files I already have, and still let me download the rest instead of starting the batch over and download everything again.
EDIT: well, at least there's a button to merge with existing file, its just too bad I have to do it for all the files I already have...
