I am using Shareaza 2.5.0. When I try to download something from cnet downloads or from google earth Shareaza 2.5.0 takes over to download the file. Is there a way to disable this?

Yes, it can be found in the settings under "Web". It's called "Use Shareaza [...] web downloads".
