Feature suggestion: import Vista star ratings.

Postby grey-hame » 29 Nov 2009 06:53

Windows Vista allows some types of media to be given a zero to five star rating. I notice that Shareaza 2.4.0.0 doesn't appear to recognize these when files are added to the library. It could be handy to have ratings (other than zero star) automatically applied to Shareaza's library on the supported file types, at least when the file is newly added to the library (or moved, renamed, &c. which makes Shareaza treat it as new).

P.S. your forum has grown another annoying bug. When I tried to go from the support forum to this one, it incorrectly treated it as a request to log out instead. And when I tried to log back in I got a Firefox error page! It said something about a failing redirect. Then hitting "back" resulted in a lot of "Connecting to shareaza.sourceforge.com" without any page-loading, but walking the history all the way back to the main forum page and then retracing my steps worked, and it treated me as logged in again.

Obviously this should not happen. Selecting an item from the "forum jump" drop-down is not a click on the log out link and should never be misinterpreted as one; logging in should never produce an error message other than if the client's network connection is down or the password is wrong (never, in particular, a 400-series or 500-series error or any of Firefox's error pages for anything other than host unreachable), and the forum HTTP server should never ignore GET requests completely. All three happening within a few tens of seconds of one another should happen especially never. :P

Now there's ANOTHER forum bug. Pretty much every page load (even just to view stuff) results in a login page. The "remember me" checkbox is being incorrectly ignored by your forum software, and this behavior is new. (Nothing has changed at my end. In particular I have not changed any settings to do with cookie preservation by the browser, or installed or altered third-party cookie-management tools. The change is at your end and it is clearly a bug.)

This includes posting, by the way: every attempt to post now produces a login prompt, which when answered produces the submission form again with your text deleted. Then you have to type it all in again and hit send to actually post successfully. Fortunately for the same post form it doesn't do it twice in a row.

Clicking "submit" on the post form is even less appropriate to treat as a request to log out as clicking on a forum jump link!!

Please revert the forum software changes you've evidently made in the past few hours as obviously they have caused far more harm than good.

I think evaluation should rely upon users experiences and judgement. It is dificult to say what evaluations Vista could import. Besides Shareaza stars allow to evaluate all types of files not only certain. We need reliable remarks, not more remarks I think. It is better to have none then false one.

Also almost no problems over here... Sometimes, the forums are a bit slow, but that's the only problem I have over here...

When I had similar problems I was adviced to clear cache, I have done this radically (reformated disk) - helped. This is not we don't want to do something - just there is nothing to be done.

I have to login again to post every time I start a new browsing session (does not STAY logged in), but other then that it works perfectly. If you are not logged in it now redirects you to the http page (as opposed to https). We didn't change anything on our end but they are obviously working on it. Have you blocked cookies/javascript/auto-redirects in your browser?

The forum problem was apparently fixed (finally!) some time this morning. That's why none of you are experiencing it now. I'd thank you, but since you disclaim all responsibility for how well your forum functions ...

On the topic of file ratings, my understanding was that "fake/misleading/corrupt" is for file integrity, and the rest is for content quality. For example, a bad (noisy, dark, etc.) rip might deserve a one star rating and a superior one a five star rating. I suppose there's still an ambiguity between the quality of the rip/whatever and one's opinion of the content proper, for example should you give a high quality mp3 of a country song five stars or one? :) Then again if you don't like country why download it?

Vista inserts ratings directly into file that why ratings available only for several file types like .wmv or .mp3, this is unacceptable since after file rated its hashes changed!

This lead to nowhere I think. I suggested "read wiki" and you have felt offended, however I did not have such intention. That was just the advice, implied from previous posts in thread and my experience. For many of us, like me in this number, English is not mother tongue and this is the place first to exchange experiences and help user as only possible, only after that for anything else. Also none here want to offend anyone, neither this nor another way. We just have more interesting things to do. However of one becomes to boring or to nasty may be replied in the same way as he used to post. I just say what I think, and that is all. You don't have to agree. This is free community of free ppl from all over the World. You are always welcome and always have the same rights as the others.

And in case of any offence, what is violation of forum rules, mods are reacting really quick, almost like dementors of Azbakan. (I will say nothing about reading now, just in every case - that was irony, to be clear and straight )
