Auto Block List updating

I think the IP block system could use some improvements. A few people have post their own "block lists" on here to help users filter out bad ips or people trying to share illegal porn, which is great but becomes a major task and a big annoyance being forced to check the forums for updates on a regular basis then having to download the file, remove all the old ips from your block list, importing the new list..etc. So I think it would be great to have an automatic download and update feature where we could type in urls to txt files (or whatever format Shareaza staff want to support xml, ini, compressed folders..etc) and have Shareaza automatically check to see if it's been updated from the last time you downloaded it. If it has then Shareaza would download it and apply the changes to your client automatically. These checks would happen when you first start Shareaza and would not happen again so that sites hosting block lists wont be flooded by requests. Peerguardian is a perfect example of what I'm suggesting.

This has been suggested many times and it is on our mental to-do list, but right now we are just trying to get shareaza stable so we can release the next version by the end of the month

That's good to hear. I had thought someone mentioned it on the old forums but I wasn't sure so I figured id post it here.

Now that 2.5.0.0 is out are there any plans to start working on a better block list system?

Plans are plans. For now easier will be to use either PeerGuardian2 or Peerblock I think. They are specialised IP blockers with edition possibilities.

Yes, this really has been discussed a lot. The basic problem is that the entire security system should be redesigned and rewritten, which is lots of work for something that basically works already. I actually once volunteered to do the backend part, but backed off when I realized I'd also have to redo the UI, which I am incapable of. In short -> lots of work since different types of rules and the UI are coupled to each other.
