BHO: Shareaza Web Download Hook...what is this?

Hi,

For some reason Shareaza was very slow to open so I reinstalled Shareaza 2.5.0.0 yesterday and noticed a BHO was added to my Internet Explorer 6. I hadn't noticed this or simply overlooked it previously and I'm wondering if this is normal?

After doing some Googling, saw one comment that this indicates that version of Shareaza is a "fake"...is this true?

HijackThis picked it up in a recent scan also. It's identified as:

Shareaza Web Download Hook

What can you tell me about this IE Add-on, what it's purpose is and if it's necessary?

If it was added by the installer you got from sourceforge it is legit. It allows to Shareaza to better integrate with IE, and for example work as a download manager for it. Unfortunately I do not know the details as I am a Firefox user myself. But I see nothing in your post that would make me worried. Other than that you are still using IE6, which I would strongly advise against unless you absolutely need it. Later versions of IE are better in almost every way.

Since I used a Shareaza 2.5.0 installer I already had in the Directory, I wasn't sure where I downloaded that one from or whether or not it was legit.

So, I'm in the process of a clean uninstall of all things relating to the Shareaza program (including CCleaner and Registry Cleaner) and am about to install Shareaza 2.5.0 from the SourceForge downloads. BTW...HijackThis picked up that BHO during a scan as a questionable item (which I had HijackThis fix as part of this clean uninstall).

I'll know in a few minutes it this application installs that BHO or not and if it does this will certainly indicate that it is legit...it not then I probably had a fake.

I'll report back later but in the meantime if anyone else has any comments on this BHO and whether or not it's legit, please post them.

My new installation seems to have gone well and it's up and running.

Note: I received this popup when starting the install:


I did an extensive Google search for pxwma.dll and got confused on all the mixed messages as to whether or not it's a necessary file so instead of removing it I just renamed it pxwma.old and I didn't receive that popup again when beginning the installation.

Any comments on the popup message and on the pxwma.dll file?

If you have Roxio and/or Sonic cd/dvd burning software installed you can and should return pxwma.dll as it is a part of that. You can try if your cd burning software works without it if you wish. It depends on how the the software loads the DLL so it could work just as well without unless you use wma files or crash on start every time.

All users experiencing problems with the false pxwma.dll detection of the v2.5.0.0 installer should use one of the builds on this page:
http://shareaza.sourceforge.net/?id=debug (the highest revision numbers ("rXXXX")are the most recent builds)
"Debug" builds can be chosen if you wish to help the community improving Shareaza by reporting errors and bugs. "Release" builds can be used for other purposes. According to your operating system, you can chose whether to use 32 bit builds or 64 bit builds - if you don't know which to use, just use the 32 bit build, as it should work for everyone.
