The RAR format itself is safe, but the vast majority of RAR, ZIP, and EXE files found using Shareaza contain malware. I would advise against downloading any files that may contain executable code.

Don't download any file with size less then 5Mb. The only exception are pdf and other file types that can be used to store books.
Don't know why default minimum filesize in |Shareaza is set to 1 byte.

Images (jpeg, gif, etc.) and music (mp3, ogg) are safe and tend to be smaller than 5MB as well. (Other formats, e.g. tiff, bmp, flac, wav, tend to be bigger, often because they're uncompressed.)

Video smaller than 5MB is often corrupt or spam, but occasionally brief, legitimate clips.

Software smaller than 5MB is usually malware.

Download the RAR and if it's got an executable in it and you weren't looking for software, just delete it without extracting anything from it. It can't actually jump out and infect you; as long as you don't extract and run it you should be safe.

The correct question is "Would someone be likely to use this type of file for what I am looking for?" RAR (and ZIP) is generally used when sharing collections of relatively small files (documents, images, or music for example) or content that compresses well (text mostly). If one of the above is not true you should ignore RAR files returned by search. RAR is also sometimes used to password protect files.

Anyway, default minimum file size must at least 1MB

Cyko: or 50% of your tracks are very short or their quality is so low that sharing such files is a crime :)

OCE: please give me example of spam/virus that PeerBlock or PeerGuardian2 blocks...

Significant part of the files in my library are under 1 MB... For example, I doubt Cyko will make the anti-spam filter over one MB any time soon. Lots of text files are under 1 MB. Many executables too.

A decent 1700x1200 jpeg can weigh in at under 900KB.
