How to set a static IP in a buggy Vista ?

This looks like a Vista problem iso a Shareaza problem but I'll try asking anyway. The OS is Vista Home Premium 64 bit with Service Pack 2 and the computer is behind a router.

About 50 days ago, Shareaza stopped connecting to Gnutella and Gnutella 2 for no apparent reason. I did the connection test and my computer failed. I was directed to portforward.com/networking/static-vista.htm to set Windows to use a static IP. What I got was a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death), no internet connection and other problems. A second attempt proved that the crash was no coincidence : again a BSOD, still no internet connection, but at first sight no additional other problems. Reversing to automatic IP selection restored my internet connection.

I set the port forwarding on the router to the temporary IP adress of my computer, but Gnutella 1 and 2 still won't connect.

Any suggestions on how I can have Shareaza connect to Gnutella and Gnutella 2 ?

Don't use that tool from portforward.com but do the job manually :)

Thanks, but I didn't use any tool from portforward. I tried to do it manually. Pressing OK on the properties window TCP/IPv4 after filling in values for a static IP caused a BSOD.

My computer now passes the connectivity test, probably due to the port forwarding on the router to the current IP adress, but Shareaza can still not connect to Gnutella 1 and 2.

I doubt even Vista has this type of a bug. More likely there is simply something wrong with the network stack with some third party software having this bug or being installed or uninstalled incorrectly. I think I have seen some tools that show installed "network stuff", but I have never actually needed to use them, so can't really help you there. Some more general Windows help forum might be useful. (But you should definitely fix this, if you can. Unknown kernel level problems have unknown consequences of unknown severity. Not a good thing.)

Shareaza can not be an immediate cause of BSOD since it runs in User-Level. Please read this Microsoft article Demystifying the 'Blue Screen of Death'.

Thank you for your suggestions.

In attempt to reproduce the BSOD I set the IP address to static. Maybe Windows didn't crash anymore because it has been updated and the registry cleaned since the last time. Behaviour of Shareaza remained the same however. Then I tried to follow the suggestions on sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/shareaza/index.php?title=G2ConnectingGuide. I didn't make sure Internet Explorer is in online mode because I don't know how to do that. I just verified it can access webpages. I also didn't add webcaches for Gnutella because the link gcachescan.jonatkins.com doesn't work.

Thus now Shareaza can connect to Gnutella2 and eDonkey, but not to Gnutella1 and DC++. I installed the beta from 18/4/2011, but all that seemed to do is reduce the number of Gwebcaches in the “Discovery Service” to 6. It was about 10 in 2.5.4.0.

Behaviour looks similar to viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1099
