Not getting downloads

Postby stbaskets » 06 Sep 2009 09:33

I did an update of windows xp and wanted to be sure it didn't change the half open limit again so I ran the EvID patch thing again and reset the limit from 60 to 50. When I did this I got no downloads what so ever. So I ran the patch again and reset it to 60 where it was. I am still not getting any downloads. This is the only thing I changes other than installing the update for windows. Any one have any ideas about what happened or how to fix it?

It is dificult to say if sth has been changed automaticly, without your action or even intention. I'd suggest to check everythinkg from the beginning starting from connection test. Or just do the clean install and let us know effects. Or perhaps sb else got better idea.

I'm not using a router, just a modem. It's the at&t 2 wire modem. This is also the third modem I have had, all three were different and all three behaved the same way, no downloads.

Have you added firewall exceptions for the proper ports and the program itself?

You will nor have any effect when connection test failed. This usually mean you should set portforward. To do this the easiest way is to visit portforward.com and follow the instrucions there, but you don't have to buy program advertised there. Find there your modem.
Download "Shareaza Instalation Guide" by OldDeath, usually link was in his signature or via G2 and there you will have more and precise info what to set and how.

If the connection test fails but you can still connect to the networks, this means that at some point there's something that denies incoming connections. Either a firewall or a router (or both) which need to be told that it must accept incoming connections on the port used by Shareaza.

So the only suggestion that comes to my mind is that you should make sure that your modem doesn't have a buil-in router feature, which is very common nowadays. If you're modem is shown on http://www.2wire.com/index.php?p=1 there may well be a reason to suspect that it indeed has a built-in router since the page reads "All in one intelligent manageable device: modem, router, wireless access point, firewall and more." You may need to read its documentation or user manual, and mentioning precisely its model here may help.

I know what you mean about internet connections :) Actually I am not going to worry about getting downloads right now. One of my persistent problems has been at&t and their continued crappy service and support so on Weds I am switching to cable instead of dsl. Then if the problem continues I will try to fix it. I am beginning to think there is something in the program itself because everything else on my pc runs really fast but sz runs slow. Like if I have it minimized and want to bring it back up it takes several seconds to do it. If I am switching between tabs, again really slow in the processing. I'm beginning to think I should just chuck it and give up on any p2p program.

Ok, I am now on cable internet not dsl and I am still not getting any downloads so it's the program itself or something else blocking it. Where do I start?

I tried doing a search of the forums for connection test and it said my words weren't specific enough. How do I find it?

This is what I got...

Results
TCP: The TCP connection has been accepted by your computer. But no answer was given to the request. This is probably all right. Just make sure that it's Shareaza using this port, not another application.
UDP: An answer has been received from your client! This means that Shareaza is able to receive UDP packets from the network.
Congratulations, everything seems to be fine and Shareaza should work properly.

This result is great, you do not need to forward a port.

Switch to Expert mode from the View drop-down menu. Then click on Tools and go to Shareaza Settings. On the new window, click on eDonkey and check "Always connect to eDonkey". Do the same for Gnutella1 too. Shareaza will connect to two additional P2P networks which means that you'll find more sources, which, in turn, should increase download speeds. Old_Death's guide explains how to do that. Just ignore the links pointing to pantheraproject within that document.

In Shareaza settings internet>connections set "Shareaza can accept incoming calls" to "yes". I think you should set static IP and portforward. The best you can do IMHO is to go portforward.com and follow instructions for your cable modem device located there for both above mentioned.

No, you don't need a fresh install to change the port. it can be done easily in the settings:
Go to Shareaza Settings >> Connection >> {Change your port} >> Check the checkbox to configure UPnP devices

Then you will need to restart your Shareaza and try the connection test again. If it works, everything is fine. If it doesn't work, you will have to change some small settings in your router/modem config.

There are no changes. Just install them and use them as you did with the stable version before. The only big notable change is on startup, it will display a little warning message about the debug builds being unstable (blablabla..). You can just ignore it and click yes.

Ok I uninstalled shareaza but when I did a search I found a bunch of files with the shareaza name. Should I manually delete them or leave them?

Ok I uninstalled the old version and any files I could find just in case. I downloaded the most recent build and set up the correct folders for downloads and incomplete files. I am setting things up now using the pdf help guide. I did the speed test and this is what I got.

I posted both links because I am not sure which one to use.

Ok, I installed sz, did all the stuff in the pdf guide and the first time I ran sz I was getting almost 200 KB/s, now I am back to nothing. The program itself runs very slow again. I have zero downloads and a jillion uploads. I think I am done.

Strange...

And you still pass the test?

BTW, are you using more networks than only G2...?

This is my test result now

TCP: The TCP connection has been accepted by your computer. But no answer was given to the request. This is probably all right. Just make sure that it's Shareaza using this port, not another application.
UDP: No answer has been received from your client. This can have various reasons, like that your firewall or router isn't properly configured for Shareaza, or Shareaza is not running on this port, or not connecting to the networks.
At least one problem has been detected and you probably have to configure your firewall or router for Shareaza.

Yes I am using G1, G2, and edonkey
