Weird bug in Shareaza 2.5.2.0

Postby macrovector » 24 May 2010 14:00

Hey guys, has anyone encountered a problem where, upon opening the Shareaza software and maximizing the window, the window flitters around the screen like it's having a really bad seizure, and all of a sudden turn white, then completely freezes, and you have to end task to get it to stop? This problem is really annoying me because I can't even use the software because of it.

Here are my system specs.

Intel Celeron E1200 1.6GHz on ECS M945GCT-3 motherboard
1GB DDR2 (666MHz)
Radeon HD2400 256MB
300GB hard drive
Windows XP Professional Edition
12Mbit internet connection

I've noticed that it happens on and off at random. It's like a time bomb - you don't know when it's going to go off to doing its thing. Sometimes it'll take only a couple times of closing and opening again, other times it will stop for a good few days, then start doing it again (as is the case today.) When I first installed it, it was doing it, then it stopped for a while, then it started up again on the day I posted the original message, and I got it to stop again somehow (hence the long period of time with no postings), and just a few minutes ago it started happening again. I shut the program down last night, when it was working fine, but when I brought it up again, the window started shaking like Jello again.

The variable nature suggests it is not caused by Shareaza alone, but by Shareaza interacting with something else in your system. The times it happens and the times it does not happen differ somehow. You are doing something different, some other application is doing something different, or your graphics hardware has occasional problems. You can start by doing a clean reinstall of Shareaza and seeing if the reason it only affects Shareaza is a bad install.

Right when you said that, it gave me an idea. The only program that really gives me problems when using P2P in general is WindowBlinds. I shut down WindowBlinds and started Shareaza, and there's no shaking. Right when I started WindowBlinds again, the shaking resumed. Seems obvious now that I think of it, it does the same with LimeWire - they BOTH lock up when WindowBlinds is running. Thanks for your help. :)

Most solutions look obvious in hindsight. Thank you for telling how you solved this, it might save the next guy who comes here with the same problem some grief.

Sounds like WindowBlinds is incompatible with software that uses custom window-drawing code. Both Shareaza and Limewire do instead of using the platform-native window style. I'll bet it causes problems with media players too; media players usually have fancy themed window designs as well.
