Audio, no video in Media Player

I'm using version 2.5.3.0- I can download video (and audio) files no problem. When I try to play the video files (mpg, mpeg) in the Media Player, I can hear the audio, but the screen is black. When I play .avi videos, I get the audio with the visualizations, as if I'm playing an audio file, but no video. When I play audio, I see the visualization and hear it no problem. If I play the downloaded file in VLC or Al Show, I can see the video. Any suggestions?

Thanks! I downloaded and installed the codecs and restarted the computer, but everything was still the same. Any other suggestions?

Does it play in the Windows Media Player? Since VLC plays it, there is somewhere probably on option to see file information (I don't use VLC, so can't help with that). You can also try using GSpot on the file. It is old, but it should work for an AVI and it tells you if you are missing something and what it is.
