Quick start wizard #2

Postby old_death » 16 Nov 2012 21:04

How about adding a page to the quick start wizard with download links for the K-lite Codec Pack, DivFix and VLC?

There are lots of questions regarding the playback of media files on these boards that are caused by the fact that users expect files to open disregarding the fact that there is no compatible player installed on their system. Such issues could be avoided by simply adding a page to our quick start wizard.

Not sure if quickstart is the right place. People don't actually read that stuff when installing software and by the time playback fails nobody will remember that "stuff I didn't read a week ago". Maybe the media player could refer users to the codec guide in the help menu when playback fails? A similar text could also be shown in file details for video fails for which thumbnailer fails.

would it be possible to complety remove the actual player and replace it by vlc??

and for previews, maybe use the old code from the working version (prior to 2.5??) or whatever is it can be. once upon the time we didn't need to divfix to be able to watch them....

it would be a way better way of doing things IMO

IIRC, the old preview system is linked to the old media player, which nobody has the source code for. Which would mean nobody has the source code for the preview system either and it would only support formats that were around when it was coded during the transition from the mesolithic to the neolithic. I could remember wrong...

The current media player can play all formats there are on this planet, as long as there is a windows codec for it - which means it can play almost 100% of all available files, so there is no need for replacing it with VLC. The effort needed to be spent to code a new media player would be better invested in other things, IMHO.

What we could probably o however is to let our player display a message asking the user to install an appropriate codec including a link to the klite codec pack website.

@Ryo-oh-ki, would such a message be possible for unsupported media files?

For previewing partials, just configure the previewer plugin correctly...

But I agree, maybe this should be done automatically. Maybe VLC could be recognized when installed on the system and set as previewing engine for certain media formats automatically...
