Search by hash?

Postby darioism » 30 May 2010 13:45

I'd like to be able to do a search for files that I already have in my system, presumably by hash. Let's say you have a file which happens to be part of a bigger set, but you're missing other files in the set. I'd like to perform a search for the file that I already have, then when found, browse the user's shared files to see if they have the rest of the set. Searching by name alone is useless in most cases. Is this possible in Shareaza? Thanks.

In library, right click on file and "Search for">"This File". Not sure how well this works in networks other than G2, though.

OK, I got it now. Looks like it took about a half hour to generate all of the hashes. Thanks old_death!

Perhaps instead of "This File" being greyed out, on a file that's not yet hashed it should cause Shareaza to immediately synchronously hash that particular file and then do the search?

Methinks some people have a fundamental problem understanding of how the library works and what hashing is about. The file is not in the library to be searched until you add it or a folder containing it or it is downloaded then it can take a short or long while for it to be hashed based on size and speed of your system.. up to 20 minutes for a single file. You can't search for a file until it is done hashing. The hash is how the file is found in the library so you will get jack squat until hashing is finished.
