Gnutella2 wont connect

Postby limelight2112 » 12 Apr 2011 18:13

I have been using Shareaza for about 5 years now without any problems. A couple of weeks ago i noticed Gnutella2 was not connecting. Edonkey connects but it now always just says "connecting" next to Gnutella2. I have done everything the help pages says to do....removed all links from the discovery page...queried all Gnutella caches....even went so far as to uninstall the optimized version and reinstall the standard version. This worked tempararily but returns to the same problem. I noticed a few things....1)Gnutella2 connected once and said it was connected to "77 leaves", i have never seen it say that before. 2)Gnutella2 connected in "Hub Mode" briefly. Gnutella2 on my computer has only said "hub mode" once before years ago and there was a button to tell it you wanted or didnt want it to run in hub mode....cant find this anymore. Not talking about the (3)options on the bottom of the network page in Shareaza settings...."leaf to hub, hub to leaf, hub to hub". Anyway...does anyone have any thing to offer regarding this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

it is most likely a bug. It should be fixed in the latest daily build, so please try that and let us know if it works.

Downloaded and installed the debug with the link you supplied. Worked temporarily but am still having the same problem. Like i said, it worked for awhile after installing it but when i turned it on today, it connected briefly to Gnutella2 and now it just says "disconnected". Really frustrating....i use this program almost daily and would really like to get it working again. This is the first time in 5 years i have ever had any trouble with it. i use Bit Defender for internet security so i should be good there. PLEASE HELP!

Also...this version, 2.54.1, puts up a warning that this version is an "alpha test" version and could be unstable and could be subject to major crashing. Do i ignore the warning?

Yes, you can ignore the warning. The quality and stability of alphas is not so much bad as it is unpredictable, it could be much worse than the stable version which is why there is a warning, but it could also be better than the stable version due to bugs having been fixed. Also while Shareaza has bugs and the alpha could have some new ones, the design of Shareaza is such that the odds of any bugs damaging anything other than Shareaza itself (requiring you to do a clean reinstall) are rather remote. Leading to nuisance, irritation, and wasted time, but no actual harm.

Thanks for the response. Good info. One more question. Now today when i turned on shareaza, another warning came up saying that the 2.54.1 alpha test trial has run out and that i need to install the actual program for continued full use of the program. Do i ignore this as well? Thanks again.

Yes, you can either ignore it or install a newer debug version. Basically it is a reminder so people don't forget that they are not using a stable version and they should eventually upgrade. When to upgrade is up to you, there is no real harm in waiting until the next release version comes out. The reminder is necessary since the automated update notification doesn't really work for the debug versions and we can only really support the latest builds fully. (Since otherwise the first advice would be "Install the latest build to check if this has already been fixed.")

I was having this issue for a long time, as well. It seemed to be fixed with the latest version upgrade, HOWEVER then Shareaza always claimed I was behind a router/firewall (which I wasn't). Then it stopped saying that, but my search results are pitiful/pathetic/horrible. *shrug* Everything used to work fine and I haven't made any changes to my computer that would affect Shareaza. =\

Unfortunately, installing a new version of Shareaza qualifies as a change in your computer that might affect Shareaza. The same thing actually happened to me, I just changed the port Shareaza uses and checked the use UPnP checkbox. A router reset or PC reboot, followed by checking the UPnP checkbox might have worked as well. YMMV, I do not actually know what my problem was, even less what yours is.

Anyway, if you think you are not behind a firewall, do the connection test from the help menu.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the connection test always said my connection was fine. =\

I'll try unchecking the uPnP box, though. Thanks for the suggestion.

Actually, in my case it was rechecking the box that helped, not unchecking.

If you pass the connection test, you can change the "can accept incoming connections" in settings.connection from "auto" to "yes".
