Attempting download freezes program.

Postby tzilly » 13 Nov 2012 16:24

I've tried getting both 2.5.5.0 and 2.6.0.0 to work, 32-bit and 64-bit, and not one will. I have allowed port 6346, both in Comodo firewall and forwarded through my Ubee DDW3610. All connection tests work. The programs both connected to the networks just fine. I can search just fine, as well. But when I try to download something, the program freezes and will not come undone. Also, I can't connect to the Chat.

I have gone through the forums and bug reports. While there are many suggestions there, none seem to work in my case.

I am running Windows 7 64-bit. I have Comodo's free firewall and Avast A/V running. My download speed is 30Mb, with 5 Mb upstream. The program produces no error message at all when it freezes. I would have included those files if they were available.

Please, if you require any other information at all, write back and I will answer with any I have access to.

Does it freeze no matter what file you try to download or does it only freeze on particular downloads?

Does using a debug build fix the problem?

Also, could you check whether you have sufficient disk space on the drive where your incompletes directory* is located and whether you have sufficient rights to create new files and change existing ones in this directory?

*) have a look at the Shareaza Settings for the location

Thank you, old_death. I appreciate you taking the time to reply. To answer your questions:

Yes, this occurs no matter which file I've tried, which includes videos, pictures, music, books and archives.

I haven't tried a debug build, but I will do so after I've finished typing this.

The drive I was using for both incompletes and completed files has 60G free on it. I've also tried running the program as admin, which didn't seem to work, either.

*EDIT: I tried the latest debug build. It, too, froze as soon as I told it to download a video and, separately, an archive. The status bar changes to 'Ready' and then the entire program stops responding.

There are two more things you could try:
1. Create a new folder on your desktop and change your incompletes location to that folder. Like this you can check if there is an issue with file/folder access rights.
2. Try what happens if you have your Anti Virus and Firewall completely disabled. Maybe one of them is blocking Shareaza once it tries to download data from an "untrusted location" or something similar.

Hi, old_death. I tried the things you said. Still no difference, though I wouldn't put it past the people who made Avast to find a way to block it after it's been disabled. I might uninstall Avast and try again, just to make sure.

Thanks for your help again.

I have heard bad things about them, too. Which is one reason why I've tried using Shareaza with and without Comodo running. Unlike Avast, Comodo lets you shut it down, at least.

I think I'm going to uninstall Avast now and see if that takes care of it.

Well, I uninstalled Avast *and* Comodo. The program still doesn't work. I would feel better if it would just crash, instead of hanging up and doing nothing. If it crashed, I'd have access to a report or dump of some kind that could be used to locate and fix the problem.

Anyway, I can't ask for anymore than I've already gotten here. Thank you for the time you've spent. Peace.

I hadn't even started one, yet. =) The Shareaza install file is in there, I think. But I wasn't able to download anything to add to it.

It might helps if you use the compatibility modus.
I doesn't know, but guessing every version higher than Win98 should work. :)

You could try moving the Incompletes folder. Windows 7 does some weird stuff with default location occasionally.

Hope this doesn't double post. I wrote all this once. :)

raspopov: That is a handy little thing to know. You should be getting that log about right now.

queueclimber: That was the first thing I tried, believe it or not. lol

ailurophobe: I believe that running the program as Administrator alleviates that problem... but I'm at the point where I'll try anything.
