How do I configure McAfee Firewall 4.0 to work with Shareaza?

  1. Open McAfee Firewall by going to Start > Programs > McAfee > McAfee Firewall.
  2. On the left side of the window, under the heading Tasks, click Control Internet Programs.
  3. Find the entry for Shareaza in the program list displayed and select it. If Shareaza is not in the list, click the Add button, find your Shareaza install directory (typically C:\Program Files\Shareaza\), select Shareaza.exe, and click the Open button.

TIP: You can type the first few letters of Shareaza to quickly find it's entry in the program list.

  1. Ensure Filter this program's access to the Internet (recommended) is selected, then click the Customize... button.
  2. In the Customize Filtering Rules dialog that appears, remove any existing filtering rules, then click the Add button.
  3. Another dialog will appear. Select Allow communication by protocol and click Next >>.
  4. Under Set Conditions:, check the following boxes:
    1. And communicating with direction
    2. And communicating using protocols
    3. And communicating using local ports
  5. In the upper half of the window:
    1. Click (click here to select) after "if the data direction is". Select Incoming, and click the OK button.
    2. Click (click here to select) after "and if the protocol is". Select TCP/IP and UDP/IP, and click the OK button.
    3. Click (click here to select) after "and if the local port is". Type in the port that Shareaza is using to communicate (typically 6346), and click the OK button, then click the OK button again in the next window.
  6. Click OK to return to the Customize Filtering Rules window. Click the Add button.
  7. Another dialog will appear. Select Allow communication by protocol and click Next >>.
  8. Under Set Conditions:, check the following boxes:
    1. And communicating with direction
    2. And communicating using protocols
  9. In the upper half of the window:
    1. Click (click here to select) after "if the data direction is". Select Outbound, and click the OK button.
    2. Click (click here to select) after "and if the protocol is". Select TCP/IP and UDP/IP, and click the OK button.
  10. Click OK to return to the Customize Filtering Rules window. Click OK to return to the main McAfee Firewall window, and click Apply.

McAfee Firewall keeps telling me Shareaza is trying to access the Internet in a new way! What do I do?

This situation usually happens when the port that Shareaza uses to communicate is incorrectly entered into McAfee Firewall's filtering rules for Shareaza. To dismiss the McAfee Firewall Alert window, select Allow the communication this time, and click OK. Double-check the settings in both Shareaza and McAfee Firewall's filtering rules to make sure the communication port entered for Shareaza is the same.

To see which port Shareaza is configured to use, open the settings dialog (Tools > Shareaza Settings...) from within Shareaza, and go to the section Internet > Connection. On the right is a field that says Port. This is the port that Shareaza is using, and the port that should have been entered into McAfee Firewall's filtering rules for Shareaza.

IMPORTANT: Ensure that the Random checkbox is not checked! Otherwise, Shareaza will try to use a random port that isn't in McAfee Firewall's filtering rules for Shareaza. As a result, McAfee Firewall will complain every time you run Shareaza.

To see which port McAfee Firewall is configured to allow for Shareaza, click Control Internet Programs on the left side of the main McAfee Firewall window, under the heading Tasks. Find the entry for Shareaza in the program list displayed, select it, and click the Customize... button. The last line of one of the rules should display the port McAfee Firewall is configured to allow for Shareaza (worded "and if the local port is ...").
