Instructions for port forwording in Norton Internet Security 2006

The default settings should allow connection to Shareaza.

Note that Shareaza by default listens to local port 6346, and this is the port instructed here. Communication is both to and from this port.

  First check and edit connection rules: go to (after opening Norton Internet Security) Norton Internet Security ----> Personal Firewall ----> Configure (this will open a new window) ----> Programs (on the tabs menue) ----> Look for Shareaza in the list, if you don't find it click "Add". Under Internet Access check "Permit All" (If you are worried about viruses it is best to use updated "X-ray Filter" and "Shareaza Security Blocklist" ----> Now go to Advanced (tab) ----> General ----> This are the rules for your current location (be sure this is the Active connection when using Shareaza).

  Now check the rules (double click or click and Modify):

A. If this is a Block rule continue to (B), if not then it shouln't posses any problem. B. Go to Computers and be sure this applies to Any computer (and any adapter or at least any adapter used to connent to Shareaza, usualy this is only your internet adapter) and continue to (C), if not make sure the specified address is not used by Shareaza, such as LAN IPs. C. Go to Communications and check if this applies to a TCP \ UDP or both and continue to (C), If not then it shouln't posses any problem. D. Check below if this applies to all ports (or at least port 6346), If not then it shouln't posses any problem.

• Be sure that under Location tab the rule applies to atleast the Active connection when using Shareaza.

  If you find a rule that Blocks a connection used by TCP\UDP at port 6346 (to many IP's) this is probably your blockade (note that more than one rule can block it, although "The Personal Firewall processes rules in the following order: general rules first, followed by program rules, and then secondary rules. Within each list of rules, rules are processed in order of appearance, from top to bottom."

You might want to exclude port 6346 from the list at this stage, or create a higher rule to allow it, as will be explained.

  If you found a rule that Permits communication through 6346 for TCP\UDP (before findig a Blocking rule) then again, everything should work proprly.

  If you did not find any rule regarding TCP\UDP using at least 6346 Norton should allow Sahreaza to connect since thesse General Rules apply first and then Program Rules apply (Step 2). However, Windows might not detect Sahreaza is using the port and therefore will not apply any rule thus far, in this case it will alert you to the issue, which you will handle manually (probably by accepting connention).

  To create a rule click Add ----> Permit ----> (will regard 2nd step in a moment) ----> Any computer ----> TCP and UDP, specify port 6346 (...Add ----> Specified ports), (will also regard this step in a moment) ----> The rest are user options such as logging and name and thus do not affect the rule itself. Note that you can create this rule as a General rule or a Program rule specified for Shareaza (Step 2), as I said "...Windows might not detect Sahreaza is using the port and therefore will not apply any rule..." so you might want to create it as a General rule.
