What does "File Error" mean?

"File Error" is a general message telling you that Shareaza cannot create or update the incomplete files for some reason. Possible explanations are listed below. After the cause of the error has been solved, right click the download and select Resume.

Insufficient disk space: You must have enough free disk space to handle the entire download. Make certain you have space on both, the download drive and the incomplete drive, if they are different.

Download is over 4 GB on a drive using the FAT32 file system: Drives formatted with FAT32 can only hold files that are smaller than 4 GB. This is a limitation of your system - the only way around it is to have a drive formatted with NTFS. If you don't know what file system you are running, your OS version will usually let you know - Windows 95,98 and ME all use FAT32 by default. Windows NT, 2000 and XP use NTFS. To see what file system a particular drive uses, right click it and select 'Properties'.

The file(s) or directories have been moved or deleted: If you move the files or the directory elsewhere, Shareaza won't be able to locate them anymore. Never mess with the partial files, while Shareaza is running. If you want to move the partial files to another place, then first create the new directory, then change Shareaza's settings to point to the new location, shut down Shareaza, wait a moment, move the files to the new place and restart Shareaza.

The file or directory is read-only: If the files have been set to read-only mode, Shareaza will not be able to continue the download until it has write permission. Go to your incomplete directory, right click on the files and select properties. Then, uncheck "Read-Only" (this may vary with different operating systems).

The file name(s) are illegal: A file system has limitations on how long a file name can be and what characters can be used in it. Shareaza appends additional things to the file name for the incomplete files (the hash and the '.sd' suffix, a total of 36 additional characters), so it may happen that it cannot create the temporary files, even if the file name itself is within the limitation. To solve these file name related errors, simply rename the download to something shorter and without illegal characters. You can do this in the advanced edit dialog.
