Starting Shareaza for the first time

Now that you have succesfully installed Shareaza, lets start it for the first time, and get it configured to fit you and your computer best.

  1. Go to the Desktop, and find an a red icon with a yellow swirl inside, similar to the one used during the installation. Double click on it to start Shareaza. (Note: Shareaza versions prior to 2.0.0.0 are instead labeled with a yellow "S".)
  2. Shareaza will start. A wizard will appear that will guide you in that process. A window called the remote will also appear (you can close the remote, or ignore it for now). The remote is an interface for Shareaza's media player.
  3. The second step of the wizard asks for information about your internet connection, which will help Shareaza get the maximum performance. First choose where you are connecting from. A second dropdown list will appear asking whether you are firewalled. If you don't know, it is safe to choose I cannot accept incoming connections. Then choose the type of connection that you have, or its connection speed, and click "Next" to continue.
  4. Step four allows you to add folders you wish to share with Shareaza. Some defaults are already suggested, but you can safely delete them. If you don't have any other folders to share, you can ignore this step, and click "Next". (Note: You can also add folders to share later on.)
  5. Shareaza is community oriented, and users can browse other's profiles, and even exchange each other's favorites. To take full advantage of this you can fill in as much of a user profile as you like. (It forces you to choose a name -- perhaps a minor bug.) Any information you enter here can later be edited or removed. The user name you've chosen may be sent to others when they upload or download from you. Other profile information may be sent to other people when browsing or chatting with you. This is the only use of profile information. When you are done, click "Next" to continue.
  6. The wizard will ask what kind of interface you want to use in Shareaza. Normal Mode is recommended, but you can choose Power Mode.
  7. Shareaza can display simplified progress bars to reduce cpu use. This is rarely an issue though.
  8. Shareaza can display some additional torrent options in the settings and user interface.
  9. If you want to use a program other than Shareaza for BitTorrent, uncheck the box. The Shareaza settings can also be used to register/unregister Shareaza as the handler of the .torrent file type.
  10. In this last step you can define when Shareaza connects to the network. The two boxes at the top are normally left checked, but you can customize it to your heart's content.
  11. Now you can click "Finish". Congratulations! You have now configured Shareaza to fit your needs, and can start using it!
  12. Note that you may rerun the QuickStart wizard by choosing its tools menu item.

Continue to the next step >> (Let's start searching and downloading from the network)
