Having a static IP means that the IP of your PC does not change between sessions. This is essential for most port forwarding setups. A good guide for setting up a static IP can be found at PortForward.com. The guide covers setting up a static IP for most operating systems, among which are:

  • Windows 7,
  • Mac OS X v10.4,
  • Windows Vista,
  • Windows XP,
  • Windows ME,
  • Windows 2k or 2000,
  • Windows 98

...and it even covers Xbox 360, PlayStation3 and Wii. :)
