My download is stuck at verifying!

The verification process is an important part of making sure the file you end up with is identical to the file you started downloading. This is a protection against accidental or deliberate corruption of files, which is a big problem on some other networks. We'll spare you the technical details, but basicly Shareaza uses a mathematical formula on the file which produces a so-called 'hash' (example: 7XPUCROFSODWBJVO645DJ42I6CKKB2ZX). When you started downloading the file, you got a hash from the original source, and at the end Shareaza checks if both hashes are the same, and not different.

Shareaza checks for a maximum of 4 different hashes, partly because of the multiple networks (ed2k hashes, the bittorrent bitprint), and partly because one hash type (tigerTree) allows Shareaza to check small parts of the file while it's downloading, instead of afterwards.

The duration of this process is proportional to the size of the file, and your system speed. A file of only a few megabytes should only take a few seconds, while bigger files can take several minutes. Here are the things you can try (try them in the order listed):

  • wait. Especially for big files, it might take a while (but it shouldn't take hours)
  • restart shareaza. Shareaza might be stuck in a loop, or encountering some other problem. Try restarting it.
  • restart your computer. Sometimes Windows does odd things to your files, or maybe it's some other application messing with Shareaza.
  • assume file is 100% and reverify. This option can be found when you rightclick the download, and select advanced edit. (you need to be in power mode for this).
  • get the file out of your incomplete folder manually. Shut down Shareaza, use explorer to navigate to your incomplete folder, and move the file yourself. Chances are it's not corrupted, and even if it is, most file formats can handle a little corruption.
