Some problems and feature request

Postby siavoshkc » 02 Nov 2009 09:57

Yesterday I installed 2.5.
I use Windows Seven Build 7100

Here are some malfunctionings I exprienced with Shareaza 2.5 and 2.4: (by preview I mean of incompleted files)

- Shareaza crashes in previewing some items.
- Shareaza media player acts very poor in playing some previews but sometimes works better than VLC.
- In 2.5 Shareaza smart download preview does not close after filling progress bar (most of the times). Sometimes it only make preview once and by reclicking preview nothing happens.
- In 2.5 preview works worse than 2.4. It is unable to preview many files that 2.4 could show.
- It doesn't catagorize downloads correctly. I have 100 AVIs but it only shows 10 in videos. (maybe its because of my corrupted settings of previous installation).
- I am not sure of it but I feel when I'm connected to eDonkey2000 because there are so many eD2k clients comparing to G1 and G2 Shareaza acts poor to give priority to G nets.
- In settings there is a drop down list for media players. It doesn't keep vlc in it. Each time I should brows and locate vlc.exe.

Thank you for working on project. I really wish I could join development team and currently I am gathering neccessary knowledge to do so.

Sorry to be unclear. When it is set to vlc it will keep it. But when I switch back to Shareaza Media Player then VLC is deleted from the list. This should not happen. List should always keep recent players.

There is another BIG problem I forgot in my first post. When I shut down 7, Windows says monitor window does not close. So it doesn't shut down normaly.

[EDIT]
There is another strange bug in 2.5.
You can't delete some downloads. Delete option is grayed out with no reason.

Maybe there was no problem at all. I'm not sure if it was because I didn't wait long enough or there was really a problem at first days. It takes about a minute for Shareaza to shutdown. So when Windows says monitor window does not close, we must wait and should not cancel or force shutdown.

Or just use the 'find more sources' feature.

Feature suggestion:

Shareaza could only count sources with a queue position smaller than some limit (10 or 20?) when checking if it already has enough sources. It might make sense to have a different limit for different networks. If you have two sources with queue positions of 48 and 72, finding a G2 source will help more than finding an eD2k source, since the ed2k source would probably have a higher queue position, while a G2 source would be unlikely to even have a queue that long. Or instead of sources you could count source points with sources closer to downloading giving more points. Either way we'd get rid of having enabling ED2K impact finding G2 sources negatively.

My suggestion would be:
count only eD2k sources below 100. 10 eD2k sources are treated equally to 1 gnutella/G2 source.

or maybe:
ed2k sources between #1 and #10: equal to 1/3 G2 source
... bet. #11 and #60: equal to 1/10 G2 source
... bet. #61 and #100: equal to 1/20 G2 source

(= maybe task for a new dev?)

Yes, I think this would be a new dev suggestion. Although since this is a long time nag, it might be worth ryos time if somebody figures a really neat and simple solution. Only counting sources of QR below 100 might qualify.

I don't think it is necessary to care about the protocol when counting "source points", the queue position should be all that counts, since the upload bandwidth the peer has to process the queue does not depend on the protocol. (Giving faster downloads means a slower queue, and vice versa.)

But the point limit on searching more sources should maybe depend on the network being searched, since different networks have different overheads and expected queue ranks. (Searching Gnutella is more expensive than searching G2 which is more expensive than searching ED2K, finding a new G2 source with QR of 8 is more likely to help than a new ED2K source with QR of 800.)

Yes, common files work better, since with rare files there might not be a non-ED2K to find.

To preserve network resources both how often Shareaza looks for new sources and how often it makes a new request to a source it already found (a non-queued source hidden by default) are throttled. This is why finding more sources or trying to start the download manually can make a difference. And all other P2P applications, not just Shareaza and BearShare, apart from some leecher mods that get banned by other clients work more or less the same.

To see changes I think it will require some time, as Shareaza must divide connection according to new settings and also network partners must recognise it and accept. i don't know how much, I usually after such changes check effects in from 15-20 min to 2-4 hours. In few seconds nothing will change, so happen. Especially when we are talking about eD2k, changes on G2 or BT are much much quicker. IMHO, please correct me if I am wrong.
