Yeah, for sure. This would be a good thing to have. It would be cool if you reported the sites.

I'm not surprised. There must be at least 100 rip-off sites out there for shareaza

I think this is strategy prepared for time when we can loose SourceForge.net hosting. Will be plenty of sites displayed in Google asked "Shareaza" and our eventual net at the bottom.

Just found more clone rip-off's: Sharetastic (http:// www goforsharing com /index.php/home-mainmenu-1/sharetastic-mainmenu-126) and Trilix (http:// www trilixp2p com). These are all clear GPL violators. It's one thing for the likes of Discordia and others abusing the Shareaza name, but these clones are just taking the source code and passing it off as their own, without making their source available. The Shareaza team should try get some help from gpl-violations.org to tackle these guys.

[EDIT] Add WinMX MP3 (http:// www sharingzone com /winmxmp3.html) to the list as well.

I found this Shareaza rip off

http://www.shareaza.co.nz/

This is not neccesarely a Shareaza rip off, but it does look a little suspicious.

I really feel the development team should try to enlist the support of either The Software Freedom Law Center, The Software Freedom Conservancy or The GPL Violations Project to challenge these abuses of the Shareaza copyrights. The are damaging what credibility the name Shareaza has left. I know you would much rather be coding that fighting legal battles, but in many ways this is just as important. It is to your better judgement though I am not in your position.

as a general rule, anything that has a picture of a box with the name and/or logo on it is a scam in the world of P2P. No P2P application can be bought in stores (none that I know of) or shipped on a cd/dvd to your home

It might also be worth keeping a running list of these rip-off version sites and sending them off to hosts files sites (such as MVPS Hosts and HPhosts) and request they add them to their updated hosts files, as well as to the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing and have them red flag them in search results or better still remove them altogether. There are also tech sites that run lists of rip-off softwares to which you can get these lists added. It might also be worth creating a specialised blog dedicated to maintaining a regularly updated list of rip-off filed sharing clients called something simple like 'Fake File Sharing Clients' (dedicated to all clients, not only Shareaza) and could be a collaborative project between all the major genuine file sharing client teams, as that would would make it authoritative. It's a problem best tackled on multiple fronts and ripping away the scammers' traffic and getting them put on blacklists is certainly one front worth attacking.

Personally, I suspect the anti-piracy bunch (or agents on their behalf) are responsible for a great many of the rip-offs. It's an age old strategy...flood the market with counterfeits of the product you want to destroy to devalue it. The anti-pirates are the greatest pirates of all. These ones just wear suits.

My opinions are my own and do not represent that of Shareaza.
