Proposal: change GPLv2 to GPLv3

Postby ocexyz » 07 Nov 2009 13:22

In my limited knowledge GPLv3 is better then GPLv2. Because big parts of code has been rewritten from the beginning or are new this allow to make them GPLv3. I think it is possible in Shareaza licence to point that this and this part are GPLv3 and this and this GPLv2 still, or just mention that parts are 3 and parts are 2. And with new version make more and more GPLv3.
This also relates to PeerProject which could be I think full GPLv3, or even ought to be.
I dont know if there is any newer like GPLv4 licence.

this was proposed (by me) when GPL v3 was released. The idea was rejected because as it is now all code is licenced as "GPL v2 or later". this means that it can be included in projects that are licenced under v2 or 3. If we were to switch to GPL 3 then projects that are still using GPL 2 would not be able to use our new code

You should have seen how pissy Will got when he realized I released the Panthera code I wrote under GPL v3.

This was rejected long ago. Pointlessly upgrading the license does no one any good. I realize this is an old thread.

Since SkinVista decided to upgrade PeerProject's license to be GPLv3, Shareaza can no longer use code added to PeerProject. Since SkinVista is the only PeerProject contributor, he must also release the code under a GPLv2 or later license in order for Shareaza to be a consumer.

Shareaza would need to upgrade its license to GPLv3 in order to use code contributed to PeerProject. Upgrading the license would force any Shareaza source code consumers to upgrade their licenses as well to accept any new code changes. GPLv3 essentially is a poison.

Shareaza does not really enforce the copyleft license anyway since no one pursues violators. It may as well be public domain code for all it matters, since that is how it is treated.

I am in favor of moving to GPLv3.

If nobody moves forward, everybody will be left behind. It has always been so...

You seem to be confusing the GPL with the LGPL or BSD - the GPL (any version) requires that you release the code under a licence with the same protections.
