I Love Shareaza But The 2.5...

Postby dannyainge » 27 Dec 2009 23:38

Version is pretty inferior when compared to the 2.4 version. For some reason it continuously freezes up and sucks so much computer resources that it's almost impossible to surf the web when running it. I was just on and it started to freeze up again and killed any web surfing i wanted to do. I got so aggravated i had to close it. Anyone else having this problem? Anyone have a solution? I know a lot of people complain but i promise you that i have never ever complained about Shareaza before and i have used it for years. It's usually pretty awesome. I loved the 2.4 version. I'm sure many have already also noticed that the media player is a bit inferior to the 2.4 player as well so i wont even go into that problem. I'm just mostly concerned with the freezing up and sucking all computer resources problem. Can't really use it until these bugs are sorted out. I'll probably have to go back to the 2.4 version i guess. Anyway,i really would appreciate any possible help. Thanks all.

Well, I guess it is a matter of preference: freezing (2.5) or crashing (2.4)...

OK, joking aside: yes, 2.5 has rather serious problems with freezing, but in my experience this problem - while annoying - never affects or slows down other applications. Also, it is "temporary", meaning that anywhere from 20 seconds to 20 minutes things return to normal.

2.5 is otherwise clearly superior to 2.4.

Aside from a few issues with downloads pausing themselves (which several users have reported as new with 2.5) and Downloads.NeverDrop, 2.5.1.0 has worked perfectly for me. AFAIK there are three "real" problems with 2.5.1.0 (reported by several people and/or confirmed by Shareaza developers): those two and the issues with the media player (which I don't use). This freezing is probably system-specific.

Shareaza does not get along with ZoneAlarm, and I've seen similar symptoms when ZoneAlarm and older versions of Shareaza cohabited, which went away if either was uninstalled. So if you have ZoneAlarm, switch it for something else (I use Online Armor, which does not seem to cause problems for Shareaza; the combination of Comodo, Windows Vista, and Firefox makes Firefox unusable or I might use Comodo instead. Then again, if Google Chrome had AdBlock Plus available for it I might use IT instead.)

Well, the reason I thought my problems were not system-specific is the fact I had no such problems with 2.4. (And, in part, the fact that other people report problems too.) But this firewall thing sounds interesting, this may well be the reason. And this is funny, I'm using Kerio PF 4.1.3 - it's really time I switched to something more up-to-date...

I had the same problem. With 2.5.1 there is a bug report tool that creates a file to submit so hopefully it will get fixed. I also didn't like that the visualizations in the media player were no longer available. Petty point. And while they redid the bit torrent so that it split up the download into the individual files, there was no option at the start of the initial download to select individual files, so the split up seems somewhat pointless since with previous versions as long as you seeded up to a specified point that you could specify, then the file would be deleted. Now, you don't have to worry about seeding, you can just leach.

I just upgraded my Kerio to version 4.6. (It's called Sunbelt Personal Firewall now.) Hard to say. At first I thought there was an improvement, and maybe there is, but freezing still occurs.

By checking the network stats, I've found out that Shareaza is not actually completely frozen; the uploads and downloads continue, only the GUI is unresponsive. This might suggest that firewall software is not the culprit.

Let me try to explain this again when the program freezes it just does that OK t freezes, there is no error report of any kind, so all you can do is go to the task manager to end the program's execution and once you do that the program then is removed from menory after you get the Windows message "This program is not responding" with the single button End now that's it, you see no error report is ever generated, if there was I'd the first to tell you because believe me I'm really interested in you guys being able to get to the bottom of this..

I tried the latest debug build. Still wouldn't import ed2k partials. Listed all the files, but file size was 0MB. Weird since half the files to be imported were over 60% completed. Also took longer for the gui to start up. And then it didn't want to shut down. Keep trying. I'll stick with the official releases.

[quote="punkmaisterIt is obvious that for very long time people just won't be able to interact with the program and won't be able to do many of the things they took for granted in earlier versions, for now and up till further notice ShareAza can only function as TSR (Terminate and Stay resident program) that you do not touch for a second lest you want it to freeze on you, period... :([/quote]

Well I know that 2.5.0 did not generate any error reports, but 2.5.1 does. I know because it tries to access outlook to send it and I'm more than happy too along with any comments that I care to make.

I'm trying to remember if 2.5.0 imported files. It may have, but not completely. It's been awhile and because of the hassel with it freezing I've jumped back a couple of spaces. Right now I'm back up to 2.4. We'll see how that goes. If it starts crashing, I'll go back to 2.3.1 and if all else fails 2.2.5.

It's a shame because this is a program that I really want to like, but...

I just upgraded from 2.4.0.0 to 2.5.3.0. It's frozen while displaying "Converting Torrent". Can I go back to 2.4.0.0 without losing my "Incomplete" folder files? I know years ago the coders would code the new version in such a way that it prevented you to go back to a previous stable version (don't know why), but maybe that isn't done anymore.
I'd rather have a working 2.4.0.0 than a non-working 2.5.3.0.

Try to restart the application. If this doesn't work, identify the torrent's partial file and move them out of the incompletes folder while Shareaza is shut down. Then restart it, double click the .torrent file again (it should be in a folder that is specified in your settings) and use the download properties to merge that download with the partial file(s) again.

And don't post the same problem both at a thread of its own and at a separate thread about something else.

Hey Cyko - been a long time ... I was away from Shareaza for over a year... had lots of problems with my former ISP ... then some problems with my equipment ... and been too busy ... finally found the time to fix all the equipment ... and so now I'm back.
Found there's been a few upgrades since last year, so wasn't sure if I should hit the start button on 2.4.0.0 which I last used or move up to the new one (as I always usually do).
I'm always paranoid about upgrading anything if it isn't broken, but I thought hey - I'm one of those ones who always seems to be lucky and I never have any problems with the upgrades. But this time I have a problem.

Oh, I'm sure he didn't mean anything by it, but I had to speak my peace and present my case against his assertion.

He did give me a sensible option in the actual thread that deals with the "Converting Torrent" problem, and Old Death gave me another option (more technical in his usual :) style).
Both great options. I'll just have to pick which to try first. Shareaza forums haven't changed - you still get outstanding advice.

I still haven't got 2.5.3.0 going yet, but I'm confident I will. I just wish I knew the answer to the question I asked in this thread - if I think I need to go back to 2.4.0.0 or any previous version, can I do it without losing my Incompletes and avoid having Shareaza trying to convert this torrent for some reason? Or is it coded so I can't go back to any previous version or just not back to a certain version?

"Not Responding" is the thread in which I try to figure out why Shareaza is freezing while it is "Converting Torrent" or not. Maybe you haven't seen this glitch yet or maybe you have. But if you have any opinion on it, I'd appreciate knowing what you know if you can post it there. Perhaps this will happen to someone else when they try to upgrade.

Yes, you have multiple questions, but since they are all related and part of the same discussion they can't be answered separately without duplicating information. Also, as you probably noticed the order in which one reads these threads matters. I only found your answer to my previous "forum use advice" after already giving you more on another thread. This can't really be avoided as long as most people only read one thread at a time, so it is better to not split discussions across threads. And fundamentally it is you who suffers having to read posts made in ignorance of things you already told elsewhere. Sorry, if I sound even ruder than usual, but I am not good with the heat...

To anyone who can answer this question (I know - Why would anyone post an answer otherwise?), the question in this thread is:

For various reasons, Shareaza is freezing for some people more than usual. Can a user go back to a preferred previous version without losing their Incomplete files or is Shareaza coded so we can't go back (as it has been in the past)?

If you know the answer to this question or just want to add your comments about loving previous versions of Shareaza more than this one (re: the topic of this thread) and want to know if you can safely go back to your beloved previous version, then we welcome your comments and questions.

But if you have nothing to add, if your mother is screaming down to the basement that you have to go to bed and this is upsetting to you, if you're in a hospital and have somehow gained access to their computer, or if you're not taking your Prozac as you should be, please refrain from posting comments that some will consider hilarious but most will simply consider childish, annoying and disruptive. :)

Fighting for nothing. Sometimes we should ignore each other's posts.

BTW put a link to the new thread in splitting post to make sure when someone reads the first thread can find the second.
