Blocking wmv?

Postby siavoshkc » 27 Feb 2010 20:17

Am I right that .wmv is blocked by default? It is really a bad things to do, many of my downloads are wmv. Although there is a danger with them they can't be avoided totally.

Most of the spam / drm / virus files are windows media files, like wmv and wma.
You can easy unblock the filenames by deleting the rule in the security tab, or, less destructive, set the action to accept in the Right-Click Menu > Extended Edit... > action: Accept;

Blocking .wmv is never gonna work.

I'm now seeing a lot more spam in other extensions(and some with no extension at all!).

What we need is an active spam filter.

Run a search for a random hash and block everyone that replies.
Run with a different hash and if a client with a close ip replies block an ip range between the two.

we could leave these rules out but they would give a bad impression for first time users. The first time they do a search they would be bombarded with spam files and they would quickly give up on shareaza. This way they can still have success finding there files in other formats without having to manage a huge list of filters (and it would be huge if these files were allowed through). The filters distributed with shareaza are intended to be simple, yet effective for a long time. If they want a full list of filters they can download the AIOASF.

I agree, and I think it may be usefull to filter also all files with word "new" automaticaly because 90% of them are malware, virus or similar what do you think about it??

If you set minimum filesize u almost never get spam/virus. If u search for some video (which can be in .wmv) - set minimum filesize to 100Mb(or 600Mb or 20Mb whatever).

From my experience you can only detect spam by checking its source number being logically high, seeing a preview and checking partial download. If you teach these simple things to users, they can handle many types of spam.
