Shareaza v5.1.0.0? A cheap imitation?

Postby cadetstimpy » 20 Dec 2009 15:46

I came across Shareaza v5.1.0.0 here: http://www.freshwap.net/applications/3747-shareaza-v5.1.0.0.html

Is this a legitimate SourceForge project, or some sort of rip-off? As you can see, the name and logo look authentic, but I can't seem to find anything on the SourceForge website about this version.

An evil plot, perhaps? :^)

Nothing like ShareazaV5.1 is real client. Shareaza is 2.5.1.0. That one is a FAKEAZA, malware installer. Don't let them fool you.

This is not a legitimate sourceforge project, and I think it is safe to assume that it is a rip-off. It probably includes spyware or other malware or requires that you register and pay for it. Some of the reasons I think this page is suspicious:

1) the site appears to be based on wordpress (blogging software) and re-skinned
2) there is no link to the source code (so it either violates shareaza's licence or is not based on shareaza)
3) there is a 3D box-shot of the software (typical of scammer sites) when it cannot be bought in stores
4) the download links are all hosted on file upload sites link rapidshare and idownloadaccess*com
5) the page contains typos - typical of Chinese/foreign scam sites
6) page is filled with links to ads/irrelevant pages/other software

It is a dirty scam. I actually fell for V4 a while back and it sucked.

There is a rating system in place on that page (upper right corner), where you can rate the software...
I suggest we all do rate it as being bad...

Freshwap looks a bit dodgy, so if you go there wear a bulletproof vest or something, OK? Image

Is this the same as the "Shareaza.com" site I found? It almost looks legitimate.

If only Shar v51 were as innocent as a cheap imitation ....

just run it trough virustotal.com and it will tell you that it's a malware site.

I couldn't even download it normally, it wanted me to become member or some BS. I really wonder, how stupid do they think we are? Who even falls for that crap anymore?

It is much easier to get money from people who fall for things like this than it would be to get money from more sceptical people you might get if you made your site look more real. If I were to make a scam site I would specifically design it so that security smart people go away and stay away. Easy to fool suckers is one target demographic that is never going to be too small.
