Use of Shareaza on MacBook running Windows XP OS

Postby wesill » 24 Aug 2010 20:19

I just bought a used MacBook Pro that has Windows XP installed on it so I can completely work in a Windows/PC environment even though it's a Mac. I downloaded the latest version of Shareaza and I can download videos I've searched for but I can't get a "good" connection (and I only get "low ID"). Per the connection test it says that I need to correct my firewall or router. Since I'm not using a router, the problem appears to be with my firewall. But here's where I get confused. When I'm running Windows, I've turned off the firewall that's built into Windows XP and I've turned off the Trend anti virus I added. Then, I went back to the Mac environment and in the security setting clicked on the option that allows outside sources to enter. But I'm still getting a bad connection per the test. Help. What do I need to do? Thanks.

If you are using a cable or (especially) DSL modem, it's possible the modem has router features unbeknownst to you. Check its manual (or if you didn't get one, look underneath it for a make and model number and then google those) and see if a) you can configure it for UPnP, b) you can manually port forward, or c) you can at least put it in bridge mode (acts as a modem only, no router behavior). All will involve typing an address like "http://192.168.0.1/" into your browser and then typing a default password that's in the manual.
