Moved Downloads folder issue

Postby varsiant » 03 Feb 2011 05:32

Okay, so here's my issue: i wanted to move my downloads folder to an external hard drive because my internal HDD was filling up. I thought this might be a bad idea because it seemed to me the external would be over-worked since it transferred through a usb which is slower than the direct connection (whatever it is, but direct into the motherboard or somesuch thing). Anyway, I asked someone and they said it should be okay and not put any more than usual stress on the external so decided to go ahead with it.

First I stopped my connection, then I moved my downloads and incomplete folders to my external, then i changed the destinations in shareaza settings to the new locations, hit apply, and closed down shareaza, reopened, and it still seemed to be working off the old internal folders so i renamed the new ones so they wouldn't match the internals, closed it down. the incomplete folder on the internal became empty. i reopened and found that all my completed downloads were no longer listed in the downloads list, even though they were listed in my library. i couldn't move them or they weren't being recognized, so i cannot share them. also the partials were restarted and were still working of the old internal HDD incomplete folder, now starting to fill that with partials. So obviously shareaza isn't still working of the old locations, even though i set new ones. Why is not so obvious. Any idea? Thanks.

p.s. i also installed/updated to 2.5.3.0 right before doing all this...not sure if that factors in to the issue.

p.s.s actually it seems to be downloading to both incomplete folders, the internal and external. wtf?

OK, that is in fact strange. Maybe you should have a look at the registry where Shareaza saves its settings (Just open your registry editor ans search for Shareaza until you find yourself in a folder with the name "Shareaza" or something. It should have subfolders for the different networks and other settings, so it should be easy to recognize) and check whether all paths have been stored correctly. Note that it is advisory to have Shareaza shut down while messing around with its settings in the registry. If those paths haven't been stored as they are supposed to be, make sure to correct them, and make sure the incomplete files are located on the right location before starting Shareaza again.

As for your completed downloads not being listed anymore, sorry but that is normal behaviour and you cannot do anything about it.

As for your download directory being a mess, have a look at the group settings for the different download groups. The can have their own independent paths stored which need to be changed manually to a new location sometimes after the location of the download directory has been changed.

Once you have checked that registry stuff I told you, could you report back whether you were able to solve the issues?

Ok, I checked the registry and found the main folder under "software" list, it had only 3 entries, nothing to do with paths. A search came up with a few more entries, which seem to be 2 port settings for shareaza for TCP and UDP, which seems odd that both are running the same one port in the 6000 range...

anyway couldn't find any network settings or paths, maybe something's wrong with my registry editor...

Seems it is downloading completed files to the external but incomplete to internal, which is okay for now I suppose. But why is it not possible to return completed downloads? I just want to be able to see their ratios and keep them shared, because right now they don't seem to be sharing much, besides 2 tiny files that were part of larger torrents being listed in uploads, whereas before the move all my files were being heavily uploaded.

in terms of the download directory, where are the group settings, or what are these download groups? also, my library has double of everything, that is an item listed from old and new downloads folder from internal and external locations, respectively, but since i deleted the old folder i guess i can get rid of the duplicates...

thanks for your help :)

*edit* i guess it's downloading still to both internal and external locations for partials.....but deletes the partials from external, keeping the partials on the internal hdd, very odd behavior.

if oyu are storing your downloads on an external drive it may be helpful to map the drive to a virtual folder on your harddrive and point shareaza at this folder. This makes sure that the drive's contents will still be accessible even if the drive letter changes - which is quite likely if you are using a USB drive, and even more likely if you have multiple USB drives attached to your computer.

I doubt this will solve your problem, but it definitely won't hurt
