Shareaza not connecting to any network...

Postby silmenume » 30 Jun 2011 05:13

Hello,

This seems to be a recurring problem for me in general, but I can't get Shareaza to connect to any network.
I am running the release version of 2.5.5.0
I have port forwarding set up and the test shows the both TCP and UDP as open.
I am running W7 and am using its Firewall and Anti-virus tools.

This is what I see for hours (I added the x's for courtesy - I don't know if it was necessary, but thought I'd err to the side of caution) ...

[21:06:17] Initiating a neighbour connection to xx.176.250.205 port 6346...
[21:06:17] Timed out connecting to xx.191.228.66.
[21:06:17] Initiating connection to eDonkey server at xx.200.42.46...
[21:06:31] Timed out connecting to xx.156.106.30.
[21:06:31] Initiating a neighbour connection to xxx.30.97.172 port 6346...
[21:06:31] Timed out connecting to xx.162.53.136.
[21:06:31] Initiating a neighbour connection to xx.13.20.225 port 6346...
[21:06:32] Timed out connecting to xxx.171.191.138.

I've left it running for 24 hours to no avail and no connections.

I've gone to the point of uninstalling, rebooting, and re-installing Shareaza (with a new download just to cover my bases) with the end result of me writing here for HELP!!!!
I did, by the way, flush the Discovery Services and Host Cache - but something tells me that I to do that in a certain sequence that I cannot recall right now.

Please ask any questions you need to help fix this problem.

And, as always, thank you in advance for your time and help.

Best

Try going to your host cache window and clearing all entries within the gnutella and G2 sections - or simply run the installer again and select the option to "Reset Host Cache and Service Providers", as this will have the same result.

Hello,

Since my first post I've had Shareaza not running for obvious reasons. So upon reading your post I restarted the ap and went into the Host Cache and found G2 Cache and G1 Cache utterly empty. The Discovery Services windows shows 35 Addresses about half of which show NEVER for last accessed the other half show 1 for total Accesses (which was me manually forcing queries before I made my first post) and one Address (uhc:yin.cloud.bishopston.net:33558 - type Bootstrap) showing 284 Accesses and climbing but with 0 Hosts, 0 Total Hosts, 0 URLs and 0 Total URLs.

As I indicated in my first post I am working with a fresh reinstall and in the process I did opt to "Reset Host Cache and Service Providers".

I will run the installer again as per your suggestion and see what happens.

I would like to note that Shareaza only seem to be querying that one Discovery Service listed above and is not checking the others that are in the list (their Access number are not climbing). Even when the other Discovery Service Addresses were manually queried and I had a relatively long list in the Host Cache, I was not connecting.

Hello,

This is a one hour follow up to my previous thread. As was suggested I ran the installer again and made very sure to select the option "Reset Host Cache and Service Providers." After the re-install all I have done it open the Discovery Services Window, the Host Cache Window (G2 Cache tab) and run the Connection Test. The Connection Test came up roses with TCP and UDP showing open at 6346.

After an hour my Host Cache (G2 Cache) is completely empty though I am told at the bottom of the window the ap is "Connecting to the network..."

In Discovery Services there are 23 non-Blocked Type addresses. Only one address shows significant activity - uhc:yin.cloud.bishopston.net:33558 (Bootstrap) has had 13 accesses with zero's in Hosts, Total Hosts, URLs, Total URLs, Updates and Failures. Pong is blank.

One other address http:peertes.net/servers.php (Server.met) has had any activity at all - one Access. With this I got 6 Hosts, 6 Total Hosts, 0 URLs, 0 Total URLs, 0 Updates, 0 Failures and Pong shows blank.

At this point I checked on Network tab and the only activity is occasional attempts to connect to eDonkey. The bottom half (System) shows activity as it is trying to connect to the eDonkey servers but those connections all fail as Timed Out.

I am now going to try to manually Query Now some Addresses on the Discovery Services page to put some addresses into the Host Cache (G2 Cache) and see if any connections are made.

I manually Queried 12 Addresses (GWebCache) in Discovery Services and am now seeing 6 simultaneous efforts to connect to G2 Peers on the Network tab where before there was no G2 activity at all. All attempts to connect to G2 are showing as Timed out on the bottom half of the page (Network tab, System bottom)

I know this might be way of, but have you ever researched whether your ISP has been involved in blocking P2P traffic? Because if he does, that might as well be the problem for your connection troubles, because as you describe them, it's a bit odd...

Hello,

I did some research and the most recent I could find was a statement by Verizon back in June-ish of 2010 stating that they were fine with p2p's running on their networks and saying that what Comcast did was wrong.

That's something good at least. ;)

I suppose you're still having an empty Gnutella2 host cache?

What you can try is to query all non-blocked service providers you have in the service provider window and see whether this helps. Note that it is best to wait until the provider you have just queried has replied before querying the next one.

If you're still not having hosts in your cache by then, try to access one of the service provider URLs with a blue icon (those are for G2) or a green icon (multi net GWCs) in your web browser and then try to manually connect to one or several of the G2 IPs provided there. If nothing else helps, this should at least fill your cache with IPs to manually connect to (and hopefully, after the cache has been filled once, Shareaza will continue to connect afterwards).

This does not look like ISP throttling to me. More like something on your PC is blocking Shareaza from initiatinging TCP connections except for the web cache requests. Maybe that uses a different code path. Maybe Shareaza has the wrong IP address or you have some sort of "worm protection" enabled?

It happened to me few times. You need to make sure your internet connection is reset and new session is started. You can do this by disconnecting your modem from the electricity for a minute or shutting down the PC for a minute or two.

Hello,

@old_death – I apologize for the delay in posting, but life has a way of making a mash out of our plans.

As per your (first) suggestion I tried different ports with the appropriate port forwards set and tested as functioning. I did this three ways. First I did a manual port forward that I created by hand. Second I used a pre-fab portforward for several p2p applications that all shared the 6346 port. Third and finally I tried using other non-p2p application prefab portforwards and piggybacking. I did change the port in Shareaza to match what I was doing with the router. No change in ap behavior.

Then I downloaded and installed WireShark. Let me say that I am only one step above an absolute noob with regards to networking. I know and understand what an IP address is and what ports are and what portforwarding does and is used for. I understand that there are protocols such as TCP and UDP (and others) but do not have a firm grasp on their functioning other than to know that they are not the same. I say this because WireShark was obviously not made for people of my networking knowledge level. Woof! (I did install WinPcap)

I did manage to bungle my way to start a “capture”. Then I launched Shareaza as per your instructions. I am guessing that the strings you wanted me to keep an eye for were in the “info” field. Yes? I never saw anything that looked like “gnutella connect...”. The following is the first instance of Shareaza showing up in the WireShark info field -

50541 > gnutella-svc [SYN] Seq=0 Win=8192 Len=0 MSS=1460 WS=4 SACK_PERM=1

The number on the left bounces around a bit, yet in an aggregate upward direction. I never do see a syn/ack in a line with gnutella and I confirmed this using the find (string) function. After a short while (5-10min) it appears that “gnutella” stops showing up in the info field entirely.

By the way thank you for setting up a ticket – however long it might take to be addressed. And do thank the developer who is coding the “little test application”.

@biggestnoob – I will give your suggestion a try and post back later with the results.

Best

There is a tab called "Upload attachment" directly below the buttons to save, preview of submit your message. It should be quite self-explanatory.

Some times i get No connection and querying servers (if any shown in discovery) does no good. What are blocked servers? I can right click on a blocked one, set it as a g2 cache then query it. Often times it will work and load my cache. :D So why are they blocked?

Same problem here :

Everything looks fine, connection tests are OK. GWEBcache queries are OK. Endless attempts to connect. No hosts in cache and absolutely no connection. Tried everything found in this forum. :-(

Except for connection tests, Wireshark doesn't shows any incoming packet.
My ISP is Orange (France) . Are they blocking Shareaza ? I don't have any Orange crapware installed, AFAK.

Shareaza 2.3 used to work well but I didn't use it for a while. (I've had that no-connection experience with 2.4, on another computer)
Having now no-connection with 2.3 either, I decided to upgrade and... here I am. (On the verge on giving up with gnutella.)

I've disabled the build-in firewall of my Orange Livebox and now I can connect to other peers.

So, either there's a flaw in that firewall or Shareaza need other port than the chosen one (I'm on the default 6346).
And/Or , connection tests are not valid tests, because they were perfectly OK.

LiveBox? Sagem F@st2420? You should review its NAT configuration.
